Reviving the Workforce for Navy Shipbuilding

Macomb Community College in Michigan is addressing the urgent need for skilled labor in the maritime manufacturing industry through a transformative workforce development program. The Michigan Maritime Manufacturing (M3) initiative, supported by a $15.4 million investment, aims to train nearly 400 residents in either maritime CNC machining or welding by early 2027.

The program is housed in a 40,000-square-foot facility at Macomb's Michigan Technical Education Center. The training focuses on hands-on, experiential learning with state-of-the-art equipment, providing students with 600 hours of intensive instruction over 17 weeks.

Students can choose between two accelerated programs: Maritime CNC Machinist and Maritime Welding. Both tracks offer comprehensive training and industry-recognized certifications from organizations like the National Institute for Metalworking Skills, Haas Automation Inc., and the American Welding Society. The curriculum emphasizes practical skills, safety protocols, and problem-solving techniques tailored to defense manufacturing requirements.

The initiative goes beyond training by creating a direct talent pipeline for local defense contractors and shipbuilders. The program includes employer engagement strategies such as capstone project showcases and interview days, ensuring graduates are immediately employable and meeting the critical workforce needs of the maritime and defense industries.

By leveraging Michigan's manufacturing expertise, the M3 program not only supports national defense infrastructure but also contributes to the economic growth of Southeast Michigan by developing a skilled, job-ready workforce.
